SOUTHWEST WORKERS' UNION IN SOLIDARITY WITH IMMIGRANT COMPAÑERAS IN KARNES CITY

Southwest Workers’ Union (SWU) stands in solidarity with the 78 mujeres, and mothers at Karnes County Residential Center in Texas; a facility privately run by GEO Group. On Monday, March 30th forty of the Mujeres began a hunger strike to protest their and their children unjust incarceration. The mujeres are asking U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the GEO Group, and Karnes City for the immediate release from the facility. ICE refuses to understand distress, bigotry, fear, trauma and unjust praxis against immigrants, political refugees, and others who seek human rights, safety and asylum.

As a migrante community, it is our responsibility to support the mujeres who are committing their minds, and bodies for justice for their families in the borderland.  The unfair actions partaken by ICE, GEO Group, and Karnes City are the perpetual behavior of anti-immigration, environmental racism, sexism, and classism from a capitalistic state. SWU focuses on community-based organizing, and fights for human rights to further environmental, and economic justice. Our framework examines struggles of race, gender, class and other intersectional narratives that primarily affect low income, people of color. We understand the longevity of the mujeres incarceration can be uncertain and unregulated in these detention facilities therefore we opposes the capitalist driven geopolitics on the borderlands which only goal is to dehumanize and criminalize our children and womyn.

Texas has a track record of exploitation, therefore women, like the environment, are seen as a form of profit. Karnes City, located on the Eagle Ford Shale, is one of the largest sites of Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) in the US and home to many acts of environmental destruction. The proximity of the detention center to the extraction sites is a threat to the health of the incarcerated children along with their mothers. The cumulative effects of being exposed to contaminated air and water is known cause short and long term health problems such as respiratory issues, reproductive illness, and cancer. The compañeras refuse to consume the water provided by the center because of health concerns yet both ICE and GEO Group continue to deny the access to fresh, clean water. SWU views the denial of basic human necessities such as safe housing and fresh water and air as acts of violence against womyn and children.

ICE, GEO Group, and Karnes City are in violation of human rights to the undocumented compañeros and compañeras, and all immigrants. SWU stands in solidarity with those on the frontlines for social justice and movements aligned to fight for human, immigration, labor and environmental rights. We do not oversee the extensive retraining it would take to change this injustice, or other court decisions in which objectify immigrants from dignity.  Therefore, we demand the liberation of the womyn and children in Karnes City; for ICE, GEO Group and other incarceration profiting entities to shut down; and we demand Karnes City assume accountability on issues of immigration and environmental racism. Southwest Workers’ Union (SWU) esta en solidaridad con las 78 mujeres, y madres que se encuentran recluidas en las instalaciones, de Karnes County Residential Center en Texas; la cual fue contratada en forma privada bajo GEO Group y colabora con el departamento U.S. Immigrant and Customs (ICE). El Lunes 30 de Marzo del año 2015, 40 de las mujeres iniciaron una huelga de hambre en protesta contra por su encarcelamiento, y el de sus hijas e hijos. Estas mujeres están demandando su liberación inmediata de Karnes County Residential Center de GEO Group y de ICE. Debido a este encarcelamiento produce a las victimas, estrés, miedo, traumas psicológicos, las practicas injustas en contra de inmigrantes, refugiadas/os políticos,  otros en busca de seguridad, y asilo político. Para preservar sus derechos humanos.

El tiempo de encarcelamiento de las mujeres es incierto, por eso nos oponemos a la geopolítica capitalista que deshumaniza, y criminaliza a las/os hijas/os y mujeres en esta frontera. Como comunidad migrante, es nuestra responsabilidad apoyar a las mujeres que están dedicando sus vida, mentes y cuerpos por conseguir justica para sus familias en la fronteras. Las injusticias en parte de estas instituciones, son de un comportamiento perpetuo ante-inmigrante, ya que se da un marcado racismo, violencia por cuestión de genero, y la diferencia de clase social; todo ello derivado de un estado capitalista. SWU tiene como objetivo ser una organización con bases comunitarias, y la piedra angular de esta organización es la lucha por los derechos humanos encaminados hacia la justicia del medioambiente y justicia económica, así mismo nuestro marco de trabajo examina las luchas sobre temas raciales, temas cuestión de genero, clase social,  problemas de bajos recursos, y gentes de color.

Por lo que se refiere a este caso en el estado de Texas es evidente la explotación civil y laboral. Las mujeres que se encuentran recluidas en este centro de detención son tan vulnerables como el medio ambiente a la impunidad del las autoridades carcelarias. La ciudad de Karnes esta localizada en el Eagle Ford Shale, y se le reconoce como uno de los sitios mas grandes con el uso de procedimiento de fracking, provocando con dicho procedimiento problemas ambientales. Debido a la corta distancia de la instalación de Karnes a estos sitios de extracción industrial, corre un riesgo de salud tanto a las madres y los menores que están encarceladas, al ser expuestos a esta contaminación de aire y agua, a los cuales se suman los efectos de problemas respiratorios, reproductivos, y de cáncer. Las compañeras rechazan el consumo del agua potable del centro de detención por miedo a su salud. Mientras tanto ICE y GEO Group insisten en negar el acceso de agua limpia. Por lo que SWU examina que existe la violación a los derechos humanos, consistentes en las necesidades de refugio, agua limpia, y aire limpio, cuando se les niega.

ICE, GEO Group y la Ciudad de Karnes están en continua violación a los derechos humanos de nuestros/as compañeros y compañeras indocumentados/as. SWU esta en solidaridad con la gente luchando por la justicia social y otros movimientos que se alinean por defender los derechos humanos de inmigrantes así como el medio-ambiente. No nos olvidamos de la transformación necesaria para cambiar estas injusticias y otras decisiones judiciales que roban la dignidad a los/as inmigrantes. Por eso demandamos la liberación de las mujeres y sus familias. Demandamos que ICE, y GEO Group y cualquier otra entidad de encarcelamiento con fines lucrativos, cierren sus puertas. Al final, exigimos que la ciudad de Karnes sea responsable a los temas de inmigración, y racismo ambiental. Adelante: La Lucha Continua!
