Drag King Bilingual Story Time: Save Our Schools Edition

Centro por la Justicia, known as Southwest Workers Union, is proud to present Los MENtirosos’s eminent drag king troupe who “ Pack Puro San Antonio Pride” as they continue a favorite project: offering story time performance. This time we are proud to focus on two books ‘A is for Activist’ and ‘Together’. Both are favorites among social justice parents and inspire them to teach children about speaking up and being in community.

This show is in support of parents and teachers working to Save the Schools in response to SAISD’s “Rightsizing” recommendations.

This is an all ages show that will take place on Saturday November 11th at 12:00 PM. The show will last about 1 hour. This show will be at the SA Alliance House on 120 Adams Street. Tickets are free and you can choose to RSVP at www.swujustice.org/dkst. For more information please call 210.701.2122.

Dancing, Reading, Arte y Ganas are each part of the experience which begins as Artistic Director SirGio leads everyone in Joyful Movement. Then the children can dig into their Swag Bags which contain, among other goodies, musical instruments to be used during the performance. Special Guest is dance troupe Zombie Bazaar and local organizations will be tabling.

Los MENtirosos promote body positivity, inclusion, self-awareness, the protection of Mother Earth and pride in Mexican and Indigenous cultures and languages. Along with counting and learning shapes and colors, pronouns and the concept of gender identity are introduced. Parents have been overwhelmingly appreciative of the sweet, simple way everything is presented. According to founders, Nacho and SirGio, “Los MEN could not be happier with the success of our mission to awaken and cultivate strength in community by engaging our youngest family members with Dancing, Reading, Arte y Ganas”.

About the Books:

‘A is for Activist’ written and illustrated by Innosanto Nagara

“This bestselling ABC book is written and illustrated for the next generation of progressives: families who want their kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ rights, and everything else that activists believe in and fight for. A continuous bestseller for Triangle Square, we heard from booksellers around the country who clamored for a large format edition that would appeal to children over the age of 5. This engaging book carries huge messages as it inspires hope for the future, and calls children and parents to action.”

‘Together’ by Mona Damluji and illustrated by Innosato Nagara.

“In Together, social justice kids book pioneer Innosanto Nagara teams up with poet and activist Mona Damluji for a stunningly tender and pitch-perfect visual feast that juxtaposes individual action with the power of people acting together. Each of the ten free-verse couplets in the poem is spread across four pages of imagery, to make a unique and different kind of board book for young kids to discover with their families.”
