CPS Campaign Update - B.O.T Meeting 3/31
To the surprise of the Trustees, the Mayor, and Rudy Garza, Southwest Workers Union and Climate Justice San Antonio showed up with half-a-dozen speakers who demanded a collective end to disconnections within the city. We presented our demands for an equitable rate structure and for disconnection protections that would prevent disconnections for the unemployed, the working-class, the vulnerable, and the medically needy.
Our collective voices were a new source of pressure on the board, and with this in mind a $140 Million project, Agenda Line Item 7, was deferred until the next Board Meeting (4/21) under calls for transparency, accountability, and community concerns. This small victory requires more diligent work, as potential Community Input Committee resolution should be made transparent and accessible to ratepayers.
We demanded an end to the closed subcommittee meetings being held without public input, behind closed doors and with corporate interests centered during discussions. This cannot stand, and we will continue to push for open, public meetings where we can demonstrate the will of the people of San Antonio.
