Zines as a Form of Resistance
Zines have long been a tool of resistance, empowerment, and storytelling. These small, self-produced magazines allow individuals and communities to spread information, share experiences, and inspire action. Created cheaply and distributed widely, zines have the power to break through traditional media barriers, offering a voice to those often left unheard.
This year, we embraced zines as an organizing tool to engage and educate our community. From civic education to practical resources, zines became a way to spread critical information while fostering connection and resilience.
Pocket Ballot Guide: Civic Education in Your Pocket
The Pocket Ballot Guide is an 8-page zine made from a single sheet of paper, carefully folded into a compact format that fits easily into your pocket. It’s a practical and accessible resource designed to provide civic education. In a time when understanding our government can feel overwhelming, this guide breaks down the roles of elected officials and the importance of each position.
By demystifying the electoral process, the Pocket Ballot Guide empowers community members to make informed decisions when they vote. Knowledge is power, and through this zine, we aim to ensure that power remains in the hands of the people.
Know Your Rights: A Tool for Safety and Empowerment
In response to harmful laws like Texas’ SB 4, which fuel fear and uncertainty in immigrant communities, we created the Know Your Rights zine. This half-page, folded zine provides clear and practical information about:
Constitutional Rights: Rights every person has, regardless of immigration status.
Emergency Planning: Steps to create a plan in case of raids or other crises.
Resource Access: The advantages of having a library card, including free resources and community support.
The Know Your Rights zine is more than just a guide—it’s a tool for survival and empowerment. By arming our community with knowledge, we counter fear-mongering tactics with preparation and confidence.
Why Zines?
Zines are resistance in their purest form. They are low-cost, easy to reproduce, and accessible to everyone. Unlike mainstream media, zines allow communities to tell their own stories, on their own terms. Whether it’s breaking down the complexities of civic engagement or providing tools to navigate unjust systems, zines help us connect with each other while resisting oppression.
Through these small but powerful booklets, we’re building a culture of education, solidarity, and action. Zines remind us that information is a form of power—and when shared widely, it becomes a force for collective change.
