The Sex Talk Your Mom Never Gave You

Ten people attended our sexxx workshop with ten tortas in hand. The excitement in the room was apparent even before we began. We began with six questions:

  • Do you think that porn perpetuates sexism, racism, ableism, etc.? Why or why not?

  • What did you learn about sex from school? Your family? Your friends?

  • Can you list some sexual identities that you know of?

  • What’s your fetish? (if any)

  • In what ways does rape culture play out in porn?

  • When’s the last time you got tested?

These few questioned sparked a pretty engaging conversation with all participants about the various topics we covered, including a surprising openness about personal testimonies. We visited a porn site to investigate themes of rape culture, racism, ableism, etc. The results came as no surprise to anyone, especially the dehumanization of the women and more feminine roles featured in the videos.

We began our conversation about safe sex and offered different barrier and contraception options and we all learned something new when we opened a female condom and (attempted) to demonstrate how it worked. We also discussed a few myths, such as the effectiveness of the pull out method, ‘a girl cant get pregnant is she’s on top,’ and ‘women don’t masturbate’. I think we all left feeling more informed about sex, fun sex and lot more sexually liberated.
