SWU marches for international women’s day 2025

This past Saturday (March 8, 2025), SWU joined Mujeres Marchan, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, Oppressed Revolutionaries For Worker Power, Fuerza Unida, About Face Veterns Against The War, and many others from San Antonio to march for International Women’s Day. Together we gathered at Travis Park and heard speeches, held healing spaces, shared food together, and then marched down the streets of downtown. SWU also created some new movement art featuring flowers decorated with our values and other liberatory slogans that we can use for multiple events.

SWU tabled as well and talked to community members about our current campaigns. This included our Count The Bodies campaign to get first responders to collect core body temperatures at the time of death so that medical examiners can state weather (extreme heat or cold for example) as a cause of death and publish this information to the public. This will allow San Antonio to finally start collecting and tracking data on weather related deaths. Currently San Antonio does not collect this data and records shows there are zero weather related deaths in our city. We feel this is inaccurate but we need the data to back it up. For examples of data collection we can look to Maricopa County in Arizona, which has a similar climate to San Antonio, and see that they reported a record breaking 645 deaths in 2023 and 466 deaths in 2024. We are partnering with Congressperson Greg Casar’s office to push this initiative as well.

Ways to get involved:

  • Block walk and phone bank with us! We will offer trainings and partner you with a SWU staff member so you can build this important skill set and get the word out about this work. For more information or to sign up, send an email to Info@swunion.org or give us a call at 210-701-2212.
