Southwest Worker's Union Labor Organizer Job Announcements

The Southwest Worker's Union is an organization of low-income workers and families, community residents, and youth, united in one organization struggle for workers rights, environmental justice and community empowerment. SWU empowers and organizes members through education, leadership development, and direct action. The aim is to build multi-generational grassroots power to create sustainable systemic change for social, economic, and environmental justice and to build the movement for dignity and justice.

We are seeking applicants for full time Labor Organizer. This position works in the public schools organizing cafeteria, custodial and bus drivers. Primarily assisting members through the grievances process while working towards better working conditions through a lens of dignity, respect and liberation. We believe that workers’ rights is closely related to the struggles for environmental justice and systemic change. This position will work closely with other staff members leading intersectional campaigns and will report to the Associate Director and the Executive Director.

General Responsibilities:

  1. Ensure all activities are carried out with SWU’s mission statement and with the involvement of membership.

  2. Work with the membership and staff to develop and implement strategic plans for campaigns, programs, and organizational and leadership development.

  3. Involvement in overall SWU campaigns. (Youth, Environmental Justice and Climate Justice, Domestic Workers etc)

  4. Research and Development for Living Wage and Change Improvement campaign

a.     Create the program requirements for Labor membership leadership development

b.     Communicate with worker members; determine needs and interest and grievances

c.     Communicate with organization; determine needs and interest

d.     Research campaign requirements

e.     Program information is available to all workers

f.      Develop worker base in schools

g.     Evaluate the effectiveness of campaigns and programs

Promote Living Wage and Change Improvement

h.     Ensure that school districts are aware of campaign

i.      Identify worker’s members to be leaders

j.      Action Plan for getting information to workers

Plan and implement leadership and member meetings

k.     Record information and prepare reports on the labor organizing work; number of worker member, new leaders, new members and allies

l.      Provide monthly blups, quarterly reports and yearly reports and planning

REQUIREMENTS:

Bilingual is preferable but not required.

Ability to organize materials efficiently and present effectively to small and large gatherings.

Willingness to participate in training programs to upgrade skills as may be required by this job description.

Reliable transportation with liability insurance.

Ability to travel out of state and throughout state to achieve specific goals.

Ability to work flexible hours including evening and weekends.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  1. English literacy.

  2. Good communication skills.

  3. Good computer literacy and social media knowledge.

  4. Experience with facilitation and public speaking.

  5. Experience in working effectively or community organizing work.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

After a three-month trial period, the position will become full time. Compensation will be based on experience and eligibility for health and retirement plan will follow after trial period.
